Homies Empowerment Care Team was able to create a relief fund for Oakland communities, from the month of December to January. This relief fund was created with the acknowledgment that COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on our community. Our most vulnerable, seniors, babies, immigrant communities, Latinx, Black and Indigenous families, folks struggling with poverty and loss of jobs have been disproportionately affected by this pandemic. Through these uncertain times, our shared sense of unity will bring us together and make us stronger. At Homies Empowerment we believe that It takes a barrio to rebuild and strengthen our community.
The It Takes A Barrio COVID-19 Relief Fund provided financial assistance to community members who had been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund was composed of a total of $40,000. We were able to distribute fund to 318 individuals. Applicants could receive direct financial assistance to help with utility, rent or mortgage payments. We strongly encouraged Latinx, Black, Indigenous, people of color, low-income households, seniors/elders, young adults, those that are differently-abled, women, trans* or gender non-conforming folks, formerly incarcerated, single-income households, unhoused, and those who are health compromised to apply for assistance through this program.
