6/27/2022 3 Comments Listening Party with World Central Kitchen and the White House at the FREEdom Farm!East Oakland Community listening session to inform the upcoming White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health.
The last conference, in 1969, fundamentally shaped food policy for the next 50 years, including SNAP benefits, WIC and the School Breakfast Program. Homies Empowerment organized a listening session with our community to hear how individuals and families are impacted by hunger and food access. We had 3 groups facilitated by Homies staff in Mam, Spanish and English. 6/25/2022 5 Comments TOWN CARNIVAL: HOMIES and community at Arrojo Viejo Park in East Oakland #TOWNNIGHTS June 24thWe had so much fun being at the TOWN NIGHT's TOWN CARNAVAL with our beautiful community in Oakland yesterday. With over 300 folks in attendance, we ran out of our 250 cups and burritos in less than 2 hours, Town Nights hosted by Homies Empowerment Program/Adelante was a great success. It took a barrio. The 2nd group of 9th and 11th graders came with their teachers, Mr. Gardner and Ms. Asha to work alongside the HOMIES Empowerment and be in Solidarity with their community last Tuesday, 5/17/22
9th and 11th graders from LIFE Academy joined forces with the HOMIES Empowerment team to serve the community as part of their project-based and place-based learning in their environment today. We appreciate our youth leaders putting in that good work and taking care of their peoples today. Not only did they roll up their sleeves and jumped straight in with their service they even connected with the community, checking in the HOMIES staff, talked to the kids that were younger than them and even took care of the elderly by walking them with their groceries to their cars or the bus stop.
While Lila and the HOMIES Empowerment team held down the Freedom Store, Diego and Jay brought the youth to the Freedom Farm to break bread, circle around the fire and reflect from the day to talk about what they appreciated and what they're walking away with. They shared some really deep reflections from feeling humbled by helping their community, gratitude for having such privileges at home and even overwhelmed by the positivity of seeing one another help the elderly, our pregnant mothers and members of their community that didn't have much. They really inspired us today and we can't wait to see them again and are confident about the future with these leaders. Thank you to the LIFE Academy teachers Carlos, April and Elizabeth for organizing the youth leaders and bringing them over to the Freedom Store and then the Freedom Farm to help us out and inspire us today.
