Documenting Resilience Through Community Stories
Welcome to the Photovoice Project, an initiative dedicated to capturing and celebrating the resilience of communities in East Oakland during the pandemic. Our project, coordinated by The Resilient Fruitvale Coalition involving The Unity Council, TRYBE Oakland, Street Level Health Project, La Familia, East Oakland Collective and HOMIES Empowerment aims to empower community members to tell their own stories through photography and videography, creating a powerful visual narrative that highlights strength, unity, and perseverance.
What is Photovoice?
Photovoice is a participatory action research method that enables individuals to document and reflect on their community’s strengths and challenges through photographs and narratives. By sharing these visual stories, we aim to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and inspire change.

How to Participate: We are looking for community members in Oakland to join us in this project. No prior experience is needed – just a willingness to learn and share your story.

What You’ll Do:
- Learn: Receive training on photography, videography, interviewing techniques, and consent.
- Capture: Use cameras to take photos and videos that tell your story and your community's story.
- Collaborate: Work with other participants and facilitators to create a cohesive and impactful visual narrative.
- Exhibit: Your work will be featured in a public exhibition, raising awareness and inspiring change.

Participants will need to take part in a 2-day training:
- Kick off will be July 11th (Thurs) at 4pm: Virtual meeting on Zoom
- Participant Training Day 1 on July 16th, (Tues) 930am - 2p + In person
- Participant Training Day 2 on July 17th, (Wed) at 930am - 2p + In person
- Optional Participant Training on July 23rd, (Tues) at 930am - 2p
- Optional Participant Training on July 24th, (Wed) at 930am - 2p
